Snoke is a modern day cult leader/figurehead. Poe is a former federal agent/private detective hired by Leia and/or Han to infiltrate the cult's compound and find their son Ben. Poe finds Ben but is unable to convince him to leave. As a result, his cover is blown and Poe is tortured to show what happens to outsiders.
Finn was either born into the cult or was kidnapped as a baby. Despite being raised in this environment, he's been questioning and wants to escape. When he realizes that Snoke/Kylo/Hux plan to kill Poe, he decides to rescue Poe and make a run for it.
