“General! Their shields are down!” One of the technicians reported.
“Thank the Maker!” C3PO cried.
“Han did it! Send them in!” Leia called then paused as a sensation of dread came over her. She had felt a smaller version of it earlier when she said goodbye to Han, but now it felt almost overwhelming. “Admiral Ackbar!” she called, then walked over to the Mon Calamari, softer, for his ears only she said, “The Force is calling me to a task, I need you to take over here.”
“Of course, General.”
“BEN!” Han bellowed across the chamber, not only attracting his son’s attention, but the attention of Chewbacca, Rey, Finn, and every stormtrooper in the chamber.
Kylo stopped and took his time turning around. “Han Solo. I’ve been waiting for this day for a long time.”
“Take off that mask. You don’t need it.” Han said as he closed the distance.
“What do you think you’ll see if I do?”
“The face of our son.” Leia said, her voice carrying easily across the room, emerging from the shadows, still clad in her purloined orange jumpsuit. Han did not look surprised, but Kylo knew he was totally shocked.
He reached up and removed his helmet, letting it fall to the catwalk with a clang. Leia and Han were only a few meters in front of him, standing side by side. “Your son was weak and I destroyed him.”
Leia moved slightly in front of Han but kept her distance from Kylo. “No, you are stronger than you know, I know you can rise above the conflict I feel inside of you.”
Kylo snarled, “Like you know what I’m feeling.”
Leia’s face was soft but her voice was stern, “I’ve always known what you are feeling. I know you know that Snoke is manipulating you. But I also know you are possessed of a compassionate soul and the things he has ordered you to do are in conflict with that. I can feel it, I know you can feel it too.”
“It’s too late.”
Leia shook her head and held out her hand, “No, its not, please come with us.”
“I don’t have the strength.”
“Then borrow ours. We will help you.” Han said.
The light began to dim. Kylo heard Snoke’s voice command, “Show you are not weak. Kill them both”
He tried to focus his anger on the tears falling from his eyes as he drew his lightsaber and his parents took involuntary steps back, and the thought of them being scared of him dredged up an old angry pain.
Suddenly the Skywalker lightsaber landed in Leia’s hand and she activated it, “Run Han!” she shouted, then swung the saber in huge arcs in front of her.
“Kriff,” was muttered by both father and son as Leia sliced the catwalk between them. Leia took a few more steps, then cut again, causing a section to fall away. Leia joined Han in sprinting to get off the catwalk. Kylo jumped the gap and chased the older couple.
Kylo heard the detonation but he was on a mission and dared not fail Snoke. He burst out the entrance and saw Han running. Too late he realized he had lost sight of Leia and never saw the stun bolt that knocked him out.
Chewbacca scooped up the young man, slung him over his shoulder and ran for the Falcon, Rey and Finn on his heels.
Finn was shouting, “Are you crazy? That’s Kylo Ren! The First Order will never stop chasing you!”
Leia waved him off, too busy running to answer him. She did pause and pull a remote from her pocket and press it.
Rey and Finn flinched at the explosion, “What was that?” Rey shouted
“X-wing! Self-destruct! More running, less talking!”
They made it to the Falcon and Han shouted, “Chewie! You and Rey get us moving!” He pulled a kit off the bunk and handed Leia the scanner as he restrained Kylo’s hands and feet. Then he secured a collar around his neck. Finn was impressed how they worked as a team, barely a word between them.
“Found it, on his left hip.” Leia said, “Help me roll him.”
Han grunted rolling the man over, “Did they feed him moons?”
“He was never a lightweight thing.”
Finn watched as they began undoing Kylo’s belt, “What are you doing?” he asked.
“Implanted tracker, got to get to it, I can see the scar where it went in. Do you have a medical kit?”
“It’s super basic, bacta strips, anti-burn spray, stuff like that.”
“This may have the range to lead us back to base…”
“That they already know the location of by now, sweetheart.”
Leia thought for a moment, “Han, you and Finn hold him down.”
“Leia!” Han said then shook his head and braced himself over Kylo’s torso, indicated for Finn to brace himself over Kylo’s legs.
Leia had a bacta patch ready in one hand then held her hand over Kylo’s hip, closed her eyes and concentrated.
Rey gasped as she felt a sharp pain on her left hip but shook her head at Chewbacca’s inquiring growl.
Kylo woke up from the pain as Leia pulled on the device. “I’m sorry it hurts Baby.” She soothed as he roared and tried to throw off Han and Finn but was not able to, giving a yelp as Leia pulled the small device free and slapped the bacta patch on his hip. She ran to the nearest ejection port.
Kylo shouted and cursed as he struggled against the men holding him down. Leia returned wiping her hands on a rag and knelt in front of Kylo, “Stop it!” she ordered.
Kylo looked at her, studied her face and nodded his compliance. She reached over and fixed his clothing and Han and Finn let him sit up.
“What will happen to me?”
“Well first of all the First Order is not getting you back.”
“Oh?”
“Han, do you have a holo recorder on board, oh you still carry a portable one?”
“Thirty-year-old habit.” He held it up, “Any time you’re ready.”
She briskly nodded and started, “I am General Leia Organa of the Resistance. I have just captured Kylo Ren, Master of the Knights of Ren. He will be interrogated…”
Kylo snorted rudely, “And who do you believe is capable of that?”
Leia shook her head and Han lowered the vid recorder. “I am perfectly capable of looking through your head.”
“You made someone’s brains ooze out through his eyes and ears.”
“Rookie mistake. And further in my defense he was associated with the bastards who had kidnapped you and I may have been a bit, overzealous.”
Kylo snorted, “Overzealous.” He shook his head, “I don’t feel good.”
Leia looked worried, “Did we miss something? Han! The scanner.”
Han waved the scanner over him, “Nothing that this scanner can detect.”
“Rey!” Finn shouted as Chewbacca brought her to the back.
Leia listened as he reported that she collapsed. Han was running his scanner over her and Leia noticed that Kylo was slumping over, “Ben?”
“What did you do to her?” Finn screamed at Kylo. Before Leia could stop him, he punched Kylo knocking him to the floor.
“CHEWIE!” Leia yelled, trying to set her son upright as Chewbacca hauled Finn a short distance away.
“What the hells?” Han said, pointing to the welt, “Where did she get this welt? Chewie did she hit something on the way down?”
Leia looked between Rey and Kylo. She tilted her head at what the Force was showing her. She was still cradling Kylo’s head and said to him, softly, “I need you to sit up on your own, just for a minute.” She looked between them again, then reached down to unsnap the collar. The effect was instantaneous, Kylo and Rey took in deep breaths like they had just found air.
Han and Leia exchanged looks. Rey was whimpering, “There was this dark, it was trying to wrap itself around me, it was trying to pull me into some kind of sinking sand.”
Leia walked over to the girl, “Do you still feel it?” Rey seemed nervous and reluctant. Leia took one of her hands, “I know you’re afraid.”
Rey drew a shaky breath, “I can still sense it but there’s something, no someone between us. The darkness, is a person?”
“It’s Snoke.” Kylo said walking over and standing next to Rey, taking her hand from Leia. “When they put the force collar on me, Snoke lost his grip on me and then reached out for the next target on his list.”
“Me? Why me?”
“You are strong in the Force, your untrained mind was able to resist my skillful interrogation. Once I winked out he was like a glutton at the feast.” He held her hand between his, “He did order that I bring you to him.”
“What?!” Finn cried outraged.
“Where is he, Ben?”
Rey looked up at his face and saw him make the decision, “0172224 by 185, an artificial world he calls Elsewhere.”
“Han, divert us from D’Qar, head directly for the rendezvous point,” She pulled out a comm unit.
“Will you be okay?” Han said, his eyes flickering to Finn for just a second.
Leia smiled, giving him a quick peck on the lips, “I have a blaster and two lightsabers, I’ll be fine.” She activated her comm unit, “This is General Leia, I need a strike on an artificial habitat called Elsewhere, coordinates 0172224 by 185.”
“How do you know he’s not lying to you?” Finn asked as Chewbacca let him go.
“I saw his eyes, I’m his mother, I know when he’s lying.”
Rey was sitting up “But what if Snoke is gone?”
“Then they won’t hit the target, but it lets Snoke know he doesn’t have Ben anymore, does he?’
Kylo shook his head and Leia reached in between then and released his wrist binders. “Behave young man.”
Rey saw his eyes roll before he responded, “Yes, mother.”
