[fill] flightmates, rey/jessika

Short G rated drabble to wet the whistle, might come back to these two.

“What’s it like? Jessika asks and Rey halts her movements. She’s frozen now, half between one lightsaber form and the next and her muscles ache. The blue lightsaber in front of her (still not her own, Skywalker says she will start on that soon) buzzes faintly.

“What’s what like?” She asks. Her muscles burn now and sweat drips from her forehead into her eyes. She blinks it away.

Jessika doesn’t answer right away and Rey slides back into her exercises. Skywalker, and she can’t call him Master, she won’t, said that his own lightsaber training hadn’t been nearly this detailed. He had joked (and how weird was it that he made jokes) that his teachers had been old and his only opponent less than agile.

Kylo Ren is incredibly agile.

“Flying with Luke Skywalker.” Jessica finally says when Rey is almost, almost done with her exercises.

It surprises a laugh out of Rey.

“What?” Jessika asks when Rey turns to look at her. She hastily flips her hair over her shoulder, like that would disguise the fact she had been fiddling with it. “He’s a legend.”

“I’m a legend now too.” Rey says, not confidently, not cocky, just a fact. ‘The last Jedi’ the Resistance now says, a whisper that has slipped its way through the Republic. It makes her uncomfortable. She thinks that Finn’s heroism, which is also whispered about, was much more impressive. “I haven’t really had much of a chance to fly with him. He said he had no idea what to do with the Falcon.”

“Obviously. He’s an x-wing guy.” Jess puffs up her chest at that, like sharing a ship gives them a special connection. Maybe it does. Maybe ships are like the force. Rey, who loves to fly, has never felt that tie to a singular model.

“Well, maybe you should ask him to fly.” She hangs the lightsaber from her belt and looks for her water. Jessika has it, of course, and she takes it from the other woman’s offered hand. She’s still getting used to this, to everything, to the Resistance, to friends, to Jedi training.

To Jess.

“Maybe you should ask him to fly with me.” Jessika says instead. “Being his student and all.”

Rey doesn’t ask what the relationship she has with Jess is, whether they’re lovers or just friends who occasionally kiss. She thinks they might be lovers, either that or Jessika is just very demanding.

“Maybe.” She turns away from Jess, who squawks, and heads for the showers. “Or maybe not.”

She might.

But only if she gets to come along.
